The Daily Life of Johan

Johan studies music history, brings speed to England and is longing for the web.

"We stayed in Belgium a couple of days to have the cars serviced. Luckily, all three were in good shape. When it's tight between the races it's nice to avoid emergency solutions. Better to have things they way you planned from the beginning. From Mettet we had a 300 km drive to Calais and the ferry to Dover."

And then you sang the old Swedish hit song "...when we met between Dover-Calais". But you might be too young to even know that song?

"Oh, I do. We have Olle in our team. As soon as he heard that we were supposed to take the ferry from Calais he found that song and played it for us. That ferry trip was probably the highlight of this tour for him, ha-ha."

You probably left Belgium with mixed feelings having been the fastest on the track, but still had to leave the semifinals with a flat tyre.

"Yes, that's true. In the first heat I went from the outside and got off to a good start as second behind Ole. He took the joker on the first lap and I waited until the last lap. We were number one and two in the heat and Tord also set a fast time so it really looked good. For the second race the rain was increasing so I thought we would go for the rain tyres. Unfortunately that was the wrong decision so I ended up as number 15 I think. My bad choice was really irritating."

But the qualifying during day 2 was much better.

"I was on the outside in the third heat as well but got a fantastic start so I made it all the way up front. Onwards I tried to drive sensible and set a good time, which turned out to be the best. In the last heat I knew I had to beat Petter's time and once again the start was really good and i managed to push really hard and bring a maximum of points from the qualification."

However, your luck was turning in the semifinals.

"I was in front once again and I could see in my mirror that Heikkinen was losing a little bit of ground, and even more so when he went into the joker. After that Timmy was second and I thought he was closing up so I pushed a bit more, but on to the fourth lap I had a puncture. We've had several flat tyres now, and I don't know why. We have ordered new rims for the England race. Let's see if that can help. The conclusion is, though, that we had really good pace, which is very satisfying. I was specially impressed by Ole Christian. If he hadn't got those problems with the power-assisted steering I think he would have won it all. Curiosity is that I also had problems with the servo in Belgium last year, in just that car."

Of course you bring the speed to Lydden Hill.

"It gives us confidence for the weekend. I haven't been here before but the circuit looks fast and a bit hilly, but there is no jump."

As you have stayed in the middle of Europe during the week you've had some spare time between the races.

"It's a bit tedious, especially as we don't have any internet for most of the time. You realize how dependent you are on the internet, playing games and things like that. We haven't downloaded anything because we are so used to only using the web directly. We don't even have a pack of cards in the bus. On top of that all the motor circuits seem to be built in a radio shadow. The signals are often very bad."

That gives you time for other acitivities, physical training for example.

"I have done some running a couple of times and I plan to take a ride with the mountain-bike as well."
